Lead, Kindly Light

In times of profound turmoil and deep sadness, we are drawn to the familiar. And so it was, following the events of 2001, that I spent the early morning hours reading through the poetry and singing in my mind's ear the songs from The Broadman Hymnal. It was the hymnal of my childhood. And when I read the words "Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom," I was drawn to revisit more deeply the Truths found in those pages.
This CD is a result of that late night visitation and of years of singing my arrangements of the old, familiar songs. The concept was simple - I wanted to capture in my own way the musical and spiritual essence of each song I selected. The storminess of the soul in "Stand By Me," the not-often-heard dance of well-being in "It Is Well with My Soul," the sweet Brahmsian lyricism of "Sweet Peace, the Gift of God's Love," the haunting Appalachian-like strains of "Fill Me Now."
And as you listen to Lead, Kindly Light, my prayer is found in the words of Clara Scott, 1895 ~
"Open my ears that I might hear, Voices of Truth, Thou sendest clear; And while the wave-notes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear."
